ADVICE THAT’S NOT TO BE WASTED.
The UK’s leading manufacturer of agricultural films, bpi.agri, is stepping up its on-going activities to help farmers operate as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible when it comes to agricultural films. The company, which produces such well known bale wraps as Silotite, Visqueen Poliwrap and Polybale, has recently issued a number of top tips which provide expert advice on how to prepare your waste polythene for recycling - quickly, easily and cost effectively.
To avoid unnecessary cost and hassle, it says farmers and agricultural contractors should always:
1. Make sure they use a registered waste removal company who will dispose of used bale wrap and other similar products responsibly. This is important as it’s illegal to burn or bury polythene.
2. Remember to separate the various elements of waste into separate groups i.e. bale wrap, net wrap, baler twine, fertiliser bags and plastic containers.
3. Ensure the polythene due for collection is clean, dry and free from general rubbish. Collection costs are usually linked to how much the waste weighs and so any unwanted matter like water, mud or even plant/animal debris can bump up the price considerably.
4. Store waste polythene carefully and in a place that’s easily accessible for the collection vehicle.
5. Prepare items for collection either by baling/tying them together or by packing them into a suitable container like a large polythene bag.
The advice comes as just the latest in a long line of best practice initiatives from bpi.agri. The company has a staunch commitment to the environment which manifests itself in many ways including its close co-operation with sister division bpi.recycled products.
bpi.recycled products is actually the largest recycler of polythene in Europe and has reprocessed farm waste plastic collected through the Irish IFFPG scheme for several years.
Two years ago and in response to the recent Farm Waste legislation, it invested some £2 million into its Dumfries facility - doubling its capacity to recycle agricultural film waste. This recycled waste is now used to produce all manner of items - from damp proof membranes to garden furniture to the humble bin bag.
