WEST WALES FARMERS’ OPEN DAY HAILED HUGE SUCCESS

The recent IGER Open Day in Aberystwyth was hailed a real success by both attendees and exhibitors. The event took place on Wednesday 9th May and saw the IGER Research Team present the findings of two recent trials: the effect of wilting on baled silage quality and the effect of film layering on silage quality.

Attending farmers were also treated to advice on the effect a number of other factors have on the quality of silage including inadequate film wrapping and bale chopping. Additionally the IGER team demonstrated their bale evaluation techniques along with practical bale wrapping tips.

Dr David Davies, Senior Research Scientist for IGER commented: “Feedback was extremely positive and many of the farmers I spoke with were going to implement some of the techniques discussed going forward.”

There really are some simple steps that farmers can take to improve the quality of their silage, and this of course will have a positive impact on animal feed costs. As well as minimising costs the production of quality silage leads to an uplift in yields as demonstrated by the film layering trial conducted last year.”

bpi-agri, manufacturers of Silotite, the bale wrap used in both trials was in attendance, joined on the day by representatives from Dow Chemicals, Farming Connect, and the Hybu Cig Cymru (Meat Promotions Wales), and despite heavy rain in the afternoon, the event was extremely well attended.

bpi.agri’s premier bale wrap products: Silotite, VisqueenPoliwrap and Polybale are the result of a process of continual improvement to optimise film performance through using the very finest raw materials and the latest polyethylene manufacturing techniques.

This is a process reinforced by comprehensive user-consultation and research as well as field trial programmes with leading agricultural research facilities, such as IGER. These products are underpinned by after-sales support, whereby customers benefit from the very best advice and after-sales service from the in-house team of balewrap specialists should they need it.

Ends.
